The village Alhanchete is part of the municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora (15,000 inhabitants). Facilities like shops, medical care, restaurants, open air swimming pool and covered swimming pool are in Cuevas or in nearby Vera (10 minutes by car). In Cuevas you will find many historical buildings from the time of the flourishing mining industry.  On the highest part of the town there is a Moor Castle that now contains several museums. The square in front of the castle functions as a market place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The towns of Garrucha (15 km) and Mojacar Pueblo with a Moorish character(20 km) are more tourist-oriented.

Garrucha has a nice and clean sandy beach and is the most important Mediterranean port for sword fish. Mojacar Playa is a tourist center with discos etc.

The closest sandy beach is Cuevas/Palomares. There are small stone beaches, so-called Calas, a little to the north, good for snorkelling.  The most beautiful beach in the area is in San Juan de Terreros  (25 km) on a nice bay, most suitable for children. Between Palomares and Garrucha is a huge subtropical leisure pool (Aguaparque).

Almanzora valley has orange plantations and is famous for its many cave dwellings (cuevas), some of which you can visit. In the hinterland are several natural parks in mountainous areas: Cabo de Gata and Nijar, Sierra de Baza and Sierra de Maria. On the road to Sorbas you can visit a few "Western Towns" that were featured in the film sets of "spaghetti westerns". In Sorbas it is possible to go on guided cave explorations. There are several golf links within a range of 20 kilometres, among which the new Desert Springs, unique in Europe.
